Press Release
Released: October 20, 2004
(VICTORIA) CPF - BC & Yukon President Melanie Tighe-Lovsin made a series
of presentations on the value of French Immersion and Core French education
to MLAs, senior government officials and province-wide media.
Tighe-Lovsin was joined by fellow CPF - BC & Yukon Board members Heather
Newman of Dawson Creek and Laurin Shadforth of Burnaby in a whirlwind of meetings
in Victoria. They met with 15 Members of the Government Caucus at a meeting
Wednesday morning followed by a detailed meeting with Richard Stewart, the
MLA responsible for Francophone and French-Language Affairs for the government.
Tighe-Lovsin had met last week with Education Minister Tom Christensen.
"We were delighted with the response we received here in Victoria. We
were able to brief MLAs on the spectacular breakthrough in French Immersion
enrolment this year in British Columbia. With 35,468 students, it is the fifth
consecutive record year. In addition, we asked our representatives to press
the Federal Government to proceed with implementing its commitment to BC under
the Federal Action Plan on Official Languages and to raise issues such as
the teacher shortage in specialty subjects and the need to support programs
in rural schools," said Tighe-Lovsin.
In particular Tighe-Lovsin thanked Richard Stewart MLA for his openness and
assistance during CPF's "Day of Celebration and Action" at the Parliament
Building in Victoria. "Richard is a strong advocate for programs of choice
and language education in our public schools," concluded Tighe-Lovsin.
Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is the national network of volunteers that
values French as an integral part of Canada and is dedicated to the promotion
and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians.
BC is by far the largest provincial branch of CPF with more than 6,400 members
organized in 48 communities across BC and the Yukon.
