Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon Branch
Hails New French Immersion Record
Press Release
Released: October 20, 2004
Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon celebrated a new enrolment record
for French Immersion. A survey report by CPF - BC & Yukon indicates that
at least 35,368 students will be enrolled in programs across British Columbia
this year, up from 33,407 in 2003-04 (also an enrolment record.).
"This is a substantial increase in French Immersion enrolment, our fifth
consecutive record year. It has also taken place while the overall number
of school-age students has declined. This success demonstrates the education
quality of the French Immersion program, the increasing value of language
education and the efforts of local chapters and parent-volunteers to promote
the learning of languages in public schools," said Melanie Tighe-Lovsin,
President, CPF - BC & Yukon Branch.
"The growth in French Immersion is occurring everywhere in BC. There are
some important new trends to note. More communities in the Interior of BC
have gained access to new programs in recent years. A significant number of
ESL students are taking the opportunity to learn French as a third language,
particularly in the Lower Mainland. And, a large increase in registration
at the entry points of French Immersion - Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade
6 ensures that we will set more records in the coming years," concluded
Tighe-Lovsin.
Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon has surveyed enrolment statistics
from districts across the Lower Mainland and selected districts around BC.
The results indicate a remarkable new record from French Immersion enrolment
in the Province. The Province will publish the final number in December. However,
these estimates are based on classroom attendance in each district.
Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is the national network of volunteers that
values French as an integral part of Canada and is dedicated to the promotion
and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians.
BC is by far the largest provincial branch of CPF with more than 6,200 members
organized in 48 communities across BC and the Yukon.
