Announcement
Hard Work by CPF, the Yukon Department of Education, Hon. John Edzerza and
Larry Bagnell Pays Off for Yukon Students
Press Release
Released: June 2, 2004
Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon Branch is celebrating the announcement
by the Hon. John Edzerza, Yukon Minister of Education that Late French Immersion
will be coming to Whitehorse Elementary School in September 2004. The announcement
caps a year of hard work and a week of frenetic advocacy by parents and local
elected representatives, John Edzerza and Larry Bagnell, the Member of Parliament
for the Yukon.
The Late French Immersion program begins at grade 6 with students who have
no previous training in the French language other than Core French. Late French
Immersion will complement Whitehorse Elementary's outstanding Early French
Immersion program. All students entering Grade 6 next fall across the Whitehorse
school community will be eligible to enroll in the program.
"This is a remarkable breakthrough for French Second Language education
in the Yukon. We wish to congratulate the Government of the Yukon and the
Federal government for working together to make this possible. In March 2003,
the Federal government announced the new Federal Action Plan for Official
Languages. I am proud to say that in all of Canada, Late French Immersion
in Whitehorse is the first new project to be generated from this plan. Whitehorse
is number one in Canada and we are thrilled," said Mary Jane Warshawski,
President, Canadian Parents for French - Yukon Chapter.
"On behalf of our chapter and Whitehorse parents, I want to thank personally
Minister Edzerza as well as Gilbert Lamarche and Sandra Henderson of the Department
of Education who worked tirelessly on this project. In the last week, Larry
Bagnell was able to break through the last bureaucratic hurdle and ensured
that the Federal Government would provide a letter committing to support the
project. Thank you to John, Gilbert, Sandra and Larry for your commitment
and effort. This shows what we can do when we work together," added Warshawski.
"It is now up to parents to take advantage of this opportunity and enroll
their children in this remarkable education program. Late French Immersion
will enable students to pursue their dreams in life in English and in French
and is acknowledged to bring an array of educational benefits beyond the learning
of a second language. This is one opportunity not to be missed," concluded
Warshawski.
