A French Immersion Week to Remember

Canadian Parents for French - BC & Yukon is celebrating a week to remember. The week of March 6-12 has been proclaimed "French Immersion" by the Province of British Columbia.
"This has been a spectacular year for French Immersion in British Columbia. French Immersion Week is particularly special this year. We have so much to celebrate. In honor of French Immersion Week, I am proud to release CPF's top ten reasons to celebrate this year," said Sharon Taylor, CPF - BC & Yukon President.
- A record French Immersion enrolment of 35,519, the fifth straight record year for enrolment and the largest one-year increase in French Immersion since the 1980s.
- New Late French Immersion programs started last fall in 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Fernie, Salmon Arm, Whitehorse and Cranbrook. New programs were started in September 2003 in Vernon,
- New Early French Immersion programs started last fall in Ladysmith and over the past three years in New Westminster and Salmon Arm.
- New French Immersion programs will be launched next year in Whistler and Summerland.
- Record membership in CPF - BC & Yukon with over 6,600 members in 48 communities across BC and the Yukon. BC has more than twice as many CPF members as any other province.
- A drop in the French Immersion attrition rate of 15% at the secondary level and 17% at the elementary level indicating growing student support for the French Immersion program.
- Another new CPF Chapter established in Ladysmith! In 2004, two news CPF chapters were established in Princeton and Vanderhoof.
- BC's first-ever Intensive Core French program launched in Surrey this past fall.
- In a National study, BC French Immersion students outperformed students from every other province in reading and writing skills.
- New post-secondary programs in French have been started at the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and at Educacentre locations across BC.
Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is the national network of volunteers that values French as an integral part of Canada and is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians. BC is by far the largest provincial branch of CPF with more than 6,600 members organized in 48 communities across BC and the Yukon.
