Provincial Speech Competition Draws Largest Turnout Ever!
Press Release
Released: April 27, 2006
Lower Mainland - University entrance scholarships, travel to Ottawa, books, medals and cash are all among the incredible prizes that have drawn a record number of students from grades six through 12 to Canadian Parents for French-BC & Yukon Branch's annual French public-speaking competition to be held at Kwantlen University College in Surrey, on Saturday April 29.
This year, more than 230 students are expected to present their five-minute speeches in the day-long Concours d'art oratoire. The competition is open to children who are studying French, either as a subject or through an immersion programme, and who are already winners at their local school and school district levels.
BC Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations, John van Dongen, will kick off the afternoon awards ceremonies, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
"We're delighted but not surprised by this turn-out," said Sherry Taylor, board president of CPF-BC & Yukon. "BC has seen tremendous growth in the number of children taking French in school, and participating in French-language extra-curricular activities. We've got the keenest, most enthusiastic students in the country."
The competition is drawing participants from as far away as Whitehorse, Williams Lake, Campbell River and Vernon. Grade 12 winners in each of the four categories of the competition - Regular French, Early Immersion, Late Immersion and Francophone - will go on to Ottawa to compete nationally for a $20,000 scholarship to the University of Ottawa.
